Distance-based discriminant analysis method and its applications

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a method of finding a discriminative linear transformation that enhances the data's degree of conformance to the compactness hypothesis and its inverse. The problem formulation relies on inter-observation distances only, which is shown to improve non-parametric and non-linear classifier performance on benchmark and real-world data sets. The proposed approach is suitable for both binary and multiple-category classification problems, and can be applied as a dimensionality reduction technique. In the latter case, the number of necessary discriminative dimensions can be determined exactly. Also considered is a kernel-based extension of the proposed discriminant analysis method which overcomes the linearity assumption of the sought discriminative transformation imposed by the initial formulation. This enhancement allows the proposed method to be applied to non-linear classification problems and has an additional benefit of being able to accommodate indefinite kernel

Machine learning approach to semantic augmentation of multimedia documents for efficient access and retrieval

    No full text
One of the major challenges in content-based multimedia retrieval is due to the problem of semantic gap encountered as a consequence of significant disparities between inherent representational characteristics of multimedia and its meaningful content sought by the user. This work concerns the advancement of the semantic augmentation techniques focused on bringing together low-level visual representation of multimedia and its semantics thus attempting to alleviate the above semantic gap problem by augmenting the information used by a multimedia database system in order to improve the efficiency of access and retrieval. The main emphasis and contributions of this work summarized below are in the domain of supervised discriminative learning methods and ensemble techniques..

Inexact graph matching using eigen-subspace projection clustering

Graph eigenspaces have been used to encode many different properties of graphs. In this paper we explore how such methods can be used for solving inexact graph matching (the matching of sets of vertices in one graph to those in another) having the same or different numbers of vertices. In this case we explore eigen-subspace projections and vertex clustering (EPS) methods. The correspondence algorithm enables the EPC method to discover a range of correspondence relationships from one-to-one vertex matching to that of inexact (many-to-many) matching of structurally similar subgraphs based on the similarities of their vertex connectivities defined by their positions in the common subspace. Examples in shape recognition and random graphs are used to illustrate this method. </jats:p
